About Me

2002 was the year my life changed - the year I won  The Raymond Blanc Scholarship. In total I spent 11 years working in 2* Michelin restaurants - 8 years working for Raymond Blanc and 3 years working for David Everitt-Mathias. Both taught me amazing things and have moulded me into the chef I am today - for which i will always be grateful.

Home made wild garlic soup

Home made wild garlic soup from our  Taste of The Forest Menu

Here’s what some of our customers say about HIRE A CHEF…We were staying at Wharton Lodge for my 50th birthday and the host there recommended to my wife for that extra “something special” why not contact Yvette at Harts Barn Cookery School as she also does personal cooking. Superb. What this translates as is on my birthday morning Yvette arrived at our accommodation a very personable 10am armed with all ingredients to cook us Eggs Benedict. Our very own personal Chef if you will. SUPERB idea, superb service, superb food! And GUESS what??? My wife had also booked Yvette to return the following day to cook us a full evening meal! And with Wharton Lodges private little courtyards we were able to be treated like royalty! Yvette again arrived with full menu and proceeded to cook a truly spectacular meal prepared from scratch using all local FRESH ingredients! Such as trout (forgive me Yvette if I remember the fish incorrectly) caught and then smoked that morning by Yvette and made into the most wonderful paté. Main course local Forest of Dean BOAR cooked to perfection! Tasted DIVINE! Lovely little touches such as edible flowers accentuating the dishes. Dessert- Speech House Pudding (local historical house to be visited) – YUM! Oh and yes our black lab Stanley got to sample a little of each course too! Brilliant. Yvette also takes the time to explain all the dishes/ingredients but not too long to stop you tucking in! Go on treat yourself- DO IT!

The Belfrey

The Forest Of Dean is one of the few surviving Royal hunting forests which still boasts a herd of wild fallow deer. There are many places of interest within the forest which attract many visitors throughout the year.

The Belfry is nestled on the edge of the forest and originates from early mining days. It was then known as The George and was used by local people after a hard nights work down the mines, in fact the pub was frequently full at 4.00am in the morning! The George, like mining in the Forest fell on hard times and was closed by its brewery owner. It was purchased in 1991 by the Bell family who with the help of local people have created The Belfry.

The Glasshouse

The Glasshouse Inn is a charming red bricked pub in a picturesque spot on the slopes of May Hill surrounded by beautiful countryside. The Inn has been trading as a public house since 1891 and its strength lies firmly in its simplistic, unspoilt, almost timeless tradition. We have an excellent reputation for fine food and ales in a traditional pub atmosphere surrounded by beautiful countryside. We pride ourselves on ensuring that our fish, meats and fresh ingredients are sourced from local suppliers and are of the highest quality. We aim for excellence with every meal and look forward to welcoming you.

Steve & Jill Pugh took over the Glasshouse Inn in December 1996 and have turned the Glasshouse Inn into one of the best pub and restaurants in the area. High quality food is served in comfortable and traditional surroundings. The traditional pub & restaurant has grown steadily in popularity over the years with people travelling far and wide to sample the delights of this unique establishment.

This year has seen a new and exciting venture for Glasshouse Inn. We have recently finished building work on three holiday lodges to the rear of the current property. These luxurious lodges offer high class accommodation in beautiful surroundings with an emphasis on comfort and convenience. All lodges feature fully fitted bedrooms, kitchens and bathrooms. Added luxuries include private parking next to each lodge, satellite TV and wifi internet access. However the lodges will retain the country feel of the beautiful surrounding countryside. The lodges are now fully ready for occupation and we are now taking bookings.

  • Two stars - Michelin Red Guide.
  • Two stars - Harden’s Guide.
  • 4 AA rosettes.
  • Good Food Guide 8/10 rating, 2014 Chef of the Year.
  • Catey Chef of the Year.
  • Decanter Restaurant of the Year.
  • 10/10 Marina O’Loughlin, ‘ The Guardian’.
  • 18/20 Matthew Fort, ‘The Guardian’.

On entering Le Champignon Sauvage, guests will immediately notice an intimate feeling with a refreshing lack of pretension. The restaurant is warmly decorated with a display of bold modern works of art, generous table sizes and comfortable chairs. Helen’s graciousness, blend of informal conversation and professional discretion, creates a happy atmosphere with unobtrusive seamless service. Combined with David’s culinary confidence and imagination this will give you a most pleasurable experience.

David's many awards reflect the esteem in which he is held as a chef. Recognised as one of Britain's leading craftsmen, he is always in the kitchen and has never missed a service. He is also known for his tireless experimentation with anything from the most humble to the most expensive ingredients, and an “ability for making dishes taste more of themselves than the original ingredient”.

His food is a cross between the ‘terroir’ and modern French with very original touches. The menu changes seasonally with great care taken to source the finest local ingredients.

There is also a series of cookery books, demonstrating David’s cooking style and philosophy, enabling both the home and professional cook to recreate the dishes of Le Champignon Sauvage.

Gloucester Farm Shop and Kitchen

At Gloucester, we delight in feeding throngs of hungry motorists each year. Our approach to food has not changed from the simple ethos we worked to when Tebay first opened back in 1972.

It's important to us that our produce is local, seasonal and that our food is home-cooked.

That's why we make as much of our food as possible in our kitchens every day. It means we can choose what goes into recipes (and what doesn't) and that the end result reaches you quicker, fresher and tasting better.

At Gloucester, we serve lamb and beef from surrounding farms, source chicken and eggs from local producers and ensure that as far as possible dishes are influenced by seasonal produce - so don't expect pumpkin soup in April or asparagus in October. But we do promise mince pies at Christmas.

Kitchen: 7am - 9pm

Our Kitchen offers a range of homemade soups, hot meals, a healthy deli counter and salad bar, home baked cakes plus fair trade tea and coffee and freshly squeezed fruit juice.

Quick Kitchen: Open 24 hours daily

Our Quick Kitchen offers stews, pies, soups and salads plus sandwiches and cakes and fair trade tea and coffee to take away.

We absolutely love Pizza, who doesn’t? But there is something very different about real Neapolitan pizza, the kind that is produced with high quality ingredients, using traditional dough making methods and fired at high temperatures in a clay oven. We spent 18 months researching, sourcing the right ingredients and learning about exactly what it takes to make a pizza of this quality. I’m now a certified pizza chef but to provide even more authenticity we’ve recruited a top Pizzaiolo in Pasquale Mangiacotti who has based himself here in Chepstow and helped us perfect our sourdough.

Puzzlewood - A magical day out in the Forest of Dean

Puzzlewood is a unique and enchanting place, located in the beautiful and historic Forest of Dean. Explore a mile of meandering pathways, with its fantastic tree and rock formations, through this 14 acre ancient woodland. It has an atmosphere quite unlike any other wood you have visited. As well as the woods we have lots of animals, a willow maze, indoor mazes and a toddler racing track, an outdoor playground, plenty of picnic benches, a cafe and gift shop with lots of local crafts.

The magical scenery of Puzzlewood has made it a popular location for filming and to date we have played host to a number of exciting television dramas including Dr Who, Merlin and Atlantis.

Forest of Dean Sculpture

http://www.forestofdean-sculpture.org.uk/

ABOUT US & HISTORY

house

The Forest of Dean Sculpture Trust and The Forestry Commission have worked in partnership for the last 30 years to create this vital Sculpture Trail that enjoys visitors of over 300,000 people per year.  We rely on donations and fundraising to commission new works for the trail.

The Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail was established in 1986, thanks in large part to the shared vision of Martin Orrom, then Forestry and Environment Officer for the Forestry Commission, Jeremy Rees, the founding director of the Arnolfini gallery in Bristol and Rupert Martin, Curator at the Arnolfini. The original commissions, collectively titled Stand and Stare, came out of the land art movement, in which landscape and the works of art were seen as inextricably connected. Amongst the first group of artists to install works on the trail were David Nash, Magdalena Jetelova, Ian Hamilton Finlay and Cornelia Parker. The sculptures were intended to

‘…arrest our attention, cause us to pause and contemplate both the isolated object and its surroundings. They were to act as catalysts for our imaginations, releasing new ideas in us about our relationship to nature and the environment, and prompting a sense of awe and wonder.’ (Martin, 1990, p.16)

The brief given to the artists was very clear – that the works should respond intellectually, historically, physically and conceptually to the particularity of place. In other words, that all of the works would be specific to the Forest of Dean, rather than reflecting generally on environmental issues or on a generic notion of a forest. The artworks you see on the trail were not simply placed here, but developed and inspired by the place – from its history and its material qualities.

The works were deliberately discrete in the woodland. The idea being that visitors would have to seek them out or come across them by chance. However, their popularity demanded footpaths and signposting. Nevertheless, the Forest is not a gallery. It is a location, a place, an industry, an environment, a dwelling place for flora and fauna and a site for leisure activity. The sculptures and the environment are of equal value and do not  compete for attention. The Forest of Dean has a fascinating history and the immediate impression of rural idyll and romantic landscape belies the historical tensions between industrial and sylvan, man-made and natural, utopian and dystopian, settlements and forest, all of which have shaped this unique environment. As such it presents a rich source of inspiration – not only for artists – but for everyone.

Following that first wave of commissions the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trust was set up to oversee the maintenance of the trail and to commission new works – both permanent and temporary. The Trust has sought to stay true to the vision of our founders, whilst reflecting current movements in sculpture.

We invite visitors to enjoy the works on a wide range of levels. You will not find labels and information on the route, but instead are encouraged to investigate the sculptures in your own way.

You, of course, will bring with you your own stories, narratives and experiences which will influence the way you encounter these artworks in the forest. We hope you enjoy them now and come back again soon – either in another season (as these sculptures enjoy ever-changing visual contexts) or to see the new works as they appear over the next phase of commissioning.

The FODST provides opportunities for artist professional development by commissioning artists at crucial stages in their careers. The Trust’s expertise in selecting and commissioning artists at early stages in their careers is nationally recognised as significant and vital to their subsequent international careers. For example, David Nash created his first Dome in the forest in 1986, he then went onto create them across the world.

In 2016, the Trust has installed two new temporary artworks and two more permanent works following support from Forestry Commission and major investment from Arts Council England, Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, and the Gloucestershire Environmental Trust.

CHARITY

The Sculpture Trail is Owned and managed by the Forestry Commission. The Forest of Dean Sculpture Trust is a registered charity no.1059078 that raises money to commission new artworks. The charity is governed by a board of voluntary trustees: Nicholas Bury (Chair), Paul Harper (Vice-Chair), Phil Morton (Treasurer), Glynn Williams, Sarah Bowden, Joanna Greenhill, Jo Volley, Andrew Stonyer and John de la Cour. The commissions of the Trust are overseen by Project Director Cathy Mager.

The Cyril Hart Arboretum was established in 1915 with trees brought back by the Victorian plant hunter Ernest Wilson from his 1910 explorations of China.

At the time the arboretum was known as the Speech House Arboretum it was later renamed the Cyril Hart Arboretum after Dr Cyril Hart who dedicated a lifetime of service to forestry and was a Senior Verderer (1952 – 2009) of the Forest of Dean.

The collection of trees has been added to over the years and now contains species found from around the globe. The Arboretum is managed by the Forestry Commission with the help of a team of local volunteers.

There is a level surfaced trail around one side of the arboretum, the rest is unsurfaced but still flat and can easily accommodate pushchairs and those less able. The arboretum is within a fenced area making this site popular with dog walkers, whilst enjoying the area please be a responsible dog owner.

A PERFECT DAY OUT WITH THE KIDS

Looking for things to do with the kids? The Forest of Dean Family Trail is, quite literally, the perfect place in Gloucestershire for a day out with the family or a gentle cycle with friends. It’s a beautifully tranquil place to spend your spare time. It’s safe too. The 11 mile (17km), traffic-free trail explores the quieter parts of the forest, using old mining railway tracks and forest roads. Accessed directly from Pedalabikeaway, the green graded Family Trail is rideable by all ages and abilities.

It gently follows the Cannop Valley before climbing gradually through ancient oak and beech woodland to Drybrook Road Station.

If you’re lucky you may spot some of our resident wild boar and roe deer populations, or even an elusive goshawk, before descending to the picnic spots at Cannop Ponds and back to the cycle centre.
We have a massive range of bikes of all shapes and sizes, plus all the accessories (including kids seats, tagalongs, trailers and electric bikes) to ensure the whole family can get out and enjoy the forest together.

Clearwell Caves

http://www.clearwellcaves.com/

Clearwell Caves, a uniquely special home to so many amazingthings!

An extensive natural cave system, set in a beautiful valley. Walk through the show-caves and mine workings with exciting displays throughout. Remarkably, Clearwell Caves have produced artists' pigment for over 4,500 years and ochre pigments are still mined here today. You see our ochre workshop where pigment is still produced. Iron ore was mined here for over 2,000 years, until 1945; making Clearwell Caves one of the most complex and ancient mine systems in Britain. Going underground here is a great experience for all the family and an essential part of any visit to the Forest of Dean.

Are you brave enough to have a go at our wobbly bridge - while your there can you spot our Rainbow Trout, kingfisher and dippers - you may also get lucky and see our ducklings.

"Fab for families"

" It was by far the best day of our holiday from watching the wood carving before we came in, to playing schools in the victorian class room with a multitude of craft/ creative activities in between it was brilliant! Our kids particularly loved learning about making flour and celtic weapons in the tent (and making their own shields), following and reading the gruffalo trail, making fairy gardens and plaster casts, taking brass rubbings and smelling the smelly boxes! You have a great business there. All the best for the future!Pete, October 2017

"A great resource"

"A few years ago, you were enormously helpful to me when I came in to research the history of lumberjills and Italians POWs in the Forest in World War Two. I'm delighted to say that the novel I was researching has been bought by publishers and will be published next July. That wouldn't have been possible without your input, so thank you so much!

Palace Theatre - Local Cinema

https://cinderpal.com/cinderford/now/

The earliest information we have for a cinema at the bottom of Belle Vue Road in Cinderford is a lease dated 31st December 1910 for 10 years at £10 a year. This lease is to 'erect and complete within the space of three calender months from the date hereof the building intended for an Electric or Cinematograph theatre now in course of erection'
The lessee was Herbert H.Jacobs, brother of Montague (Monty) Jacobs who ran a Mens Outfitters in the Triangle in the centre of town next to the Midland (HSBC) Bank which traded until a fire in the 1980s.
It was originally called The New Theatre because there was already a theatre in Cinderford, The Empire in Commercial Street.
We are indebted to local historian Alec Pope for an article on The History of the Palace Cinema Cinderford that appeared in the Dean Forest Mercury on March 26th 1993 from which a good deal of the following is taken.
The building was single storey brick built with a dome on the roof either side of an open entrance that was closed by a concertina metal grille behind which was a hexagonal ticket kiosk just to the right of the centre. Either side of the entrance were boards which boasted THE NEW THEATRE - PICTURES AND VARIETY, with Comedy-Drama-Instruction on the left and The World Before Your Eyes on the right.
In the early days the doorman or commissionaire was Harry Knight, part of whose duties was to shout out the details of the film programme to the public in the street, just as the 'barkers' would do at the Bioscope picture shows in the travelling fairgrounds in previous years.
His wife was the pianist, providing musical accompaniment for the silent films, a difficult job needing the musician to rapidly match the music to the action on the screen, which she performed until the 'Talkies' came along in about 1930.
Free miner Henry Roberts, whose mother Olivia (Southgate) was a box office cashier from opening, remembers that there were two musicians, a piano and a violin, separated from the front row of seats by a 5ft wooden partition. Mains electricity did not come to Cinderford until 1928 so the cinema had its own Crossley single cylinder gas engine attached to a generator sited in the room where the gents toilet is now. When a tender love scene was being shown on the screen and the quiet music of the violin played to a silent audience, then the PHUT PHUT of the engine outside tended to spoil the illusion.
The action in silent films was interspersed with sub-titles to explain what was going on. Often the words were too small to be read by those in the back rows but they were helped by patrons, often elderley ladies, reading out loud for everyone to hear. Imagine how that would go down nowadays!
Henry continued, there were two performances each evening, films changed on mon and thur. The 'last house' finished about 11pm and on the walk home there were hazzards, not of being attacked or robbed, but of walking into obstructions on the roads or pavements as often the sparse gas lighting in the streets was extinguished at 10pm. There were no lighted shop windows and often the town donkey could be found in recessed shop doorways and there was a risk of walking into a protruding head....
During March 1912 the Forests coal mines had been on strike and at the end of the month the cinema offered films at Strike Prices of 2d, 4d and 9d for adults and 1d, 2d and 6d for children. Films were changed twice weekly, except on special occasions, a notable one being THE TITANIC DISASTER in May 1912 which played for a whole week. Afterwards the manager Mr E.W.Juson declared 'We are Pioneers of Cinematography in the Forest of Dean.
Adverts for 3rd and 30th July 1915 show the cinema closed for repainting and a new screen and a change of manager, Mr George Rogers. A photo from about this time shows the addition of a wooden porch on the front of the building, presumably to help keep out the winds resulting from Cinderfords hilltop position. It also shows the roof domes gone, anecdote from other cinemas suggests they were always diificult to keep watertight.
Disaster struck in 1919 when the building was badly damaged by fire. While the cinema was out of action film showings were transferred to The Empire until this too caught fire on 6th July 1919, never to re-open.

St Pierre Golf Course - Chepstow

http://www.marriottgolf.co.uk/club/st-pierre

Built around a charming 14th century manor and a beautiful 11th century church, The St Pierre, A Marriott Hotel & Country Club, is renowned as one of the UK’s finest golf courses.

Following a £1.8 million facelift, every element of the hotel has been restored to perfection and with two contrasting courses – the Old Course and the Mathern Course – it is a wonderful place to stay and play. A former host to the Curtis, the British Masters and the Solheim Cup, both courses have recently been given a £2 million upgrade by Ross McMurray of European Golf Design.

The Old Course is built around an 11-acre lake and studded with many ancient trees, including a giant 400 year-old chestnut that dominates the 2nd hole. It is a delight to play and can claim one of the finest finishes in golf with a thrilling 235-yard par-3 18th including a shot over water to an elevated green protected by sand.

The Mathern Course is shorter than the Old but has been vastly improved since its overhaul, when 18 new tee sites were added, bunkers were reconstructed and repositioned and a modern irrigation system installed. Its signature hole is undoubtedly the 14th, which crosses two rivers, but there is lots to enjoy, however you play.

As well as exceptional courses, you’ll find a state-of-the-art Golf Academy where golfers of all abilities can hone both their long and short game.
